Set during World War II on the beautiful island of Penang, The Gift of Rain tells a moving story about loyalty, love, and betrayal.
In 1939, sixteen-year-old Philip Hutton, a boy of mixed Chinese and English heritage, feels like an outsider in both communities. His life changes when he becomes friends with Endo, a Japanese diplomat. Philip shows Endo around Penang, and in return, Endo teaches him Japanese language, culture, and the martial art of aikido.
But this friendship hides a painful truth. When Japan invades Malaya, Philip discovers that Endo is a Japanese spy. Heartbroken and confused, Philip realizes he has helped the enemy. Now, he must risk everything to protect his family and save others from the horrors of war.
