Djamila Ribeiro’s Speaking Place became an instant bestseller and sparked a major Black feminist movement in Brazil. In a society shaped by slavery, white supremacy, and sexism, Ribeiro explores who has the right to speak and how voices are received.
Through the concept of “speaking place,” she examines how social position shapes what can be said, tracing Black feminist thought across centuries. Drawing on feminist standpoint theory and engaging with the works of Sojourner Truth, bell hooks, and Audre Lorde, Ribeiro highlights the silencing of Black women and encourages readers to recognize their own position, imagine new possibilities, and speak a more just and humane world into being.
